CURRENT RESIDENCE

Wendelin has a permanent home in Doddel Point, New York close to where her father resides. It is a lovely old Victorian packed to the rafters with collections of everything from books to butterflies to makeup to teaspoons. Because she is a terrible packrat.

For the duration of the assignment, she's chosen to reside in the hotel and has already started collecting new things to fill it up and make it feel like home!
CONCEPT

Whimsical daydreamer chases novelty, can't be bothered with much else.
PHYSICAL
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Wendelin is petite and pale with a slim frame, round face, and soft features that all make her seem quite delicate. This impression is only emphasized by her voice, which is high and typically quite soft. She has long, dark, slightly wavy hair and tends to wear fashionable but conservative clothes that cover her from head to toe. Elaborate robes or dresses accessorized with all manner of large hats, sunglasses, gloves, and jewelry. This style is partially chosen for its dramatic appeal and partially to help keep her out of direct sunlight. Fond of makeup, it's rare to see her without a perfectly made-up face, often with bold (compared to her complexion) lipstick and blush. She also has noticeably elongated canines.

She has a dreamy demeanor and often gets lost in her own thoughts. While this is mostly genuine, she may also pretend from time to time to avoid dealing with things (or people) she doesn't want to bother with.

PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT
MOTIVATION

Escaping ennui is Wendelin's primary motivation. Before becoming an Auror, she drifted. She worked briefly as a professional duelist after high school because of her talent, but found it uninspiring despite being fairly successful. What was so good about winning, anyway? She then bounced from one job to another; she was a clerk in a magical antiquities shop, she was an investigator's assistant, she was an editor for her father's writing. None of it held her interest. She took notice of the Auror program because of a former partner that broke off their relationship to commit to their calling, claiming that it was something she couldn't understand. This bothered her. A lot. And she made the deeply petty and misguided decision to show them that she could commit by entering the same program.

While this remained part of her motivation early in her academy training, the work itself soon started to hold her attention all on its own. It was unpredictable and challenging and brought her into contact with all sorts of unusual things and strange secrets. She values the novelty of her work and the fact that she's living the sort of life one might read about in a book, but finds the rules and the red tape that come with a government position dull and frustrating. But someone else can take care of her paperwork, right?
APPLICATION

Wendelin is a clever spellslinger that's adept at outmaneuvering a target and hitting them hard. She has a wide breadth of knowledge when it comes to spells and she takes advantage of her disarming appearance, her talent for moving quickly and quietly, or her unusual vampiric abilities to get the drop on others. She enjoys being an unexpected hammer in a fight and will sometimes express dissatisfaction with a mission if it goes too smoothly or wasn't very interesting. While she'll work on her own if she has to, she prefers to follow the lead of another Auror that will take responsibility for the mission and hand down the orders. Just point and shoot, boss; she's happy to be a bullet.
RISK

Composed and adaptable under pressure, Wendelin does well in high-stress situations and rarely loses her head no matter how dire a situation becomes. That said, she is a fickle daydreamer that can be slow to become properly invested in what she's doing when the pressure isn't on. Those around her may think of her as lazy and unreliable and that's not an entirely unfair assessment. It's all or nothing with her.
INTEGRITY

Wendelin doesn't prioritize being a good person; she prioritizes what she wants and what she wants for those she cares for above objective morality. After all, nobody else is going to look out for her interests, are they? While she takes no joy in breaking rules or ignoring authority, she will when she feels like it's necessary and the consequences won't be too catastrophic. She holds a certain amount of resentment for those that adhere to tradition just because it's tradition (especially when those people are Purebloods) and is open to exploring new ideas, new methods, and new ways of thinking. It's called progress, everyone. All that said, she isn't devoid of empathy and will occasionally deviate from her self-interest because it's the 'right' thing to do.
ATTITUDE

Wendelin is reliably calm and capable under pressure and works hard when push comes to shove. There's no one better to have in your corner during a bout of spellslinging. But getting her motivated can be difficult. If something isn't important or interesting or directly her responsibility, she won't volunteer to do it and she is notoriously fickle when it comes to dotting I's and crossing T's. She hates paperwork and will drop it on someone else's desk if she can get away with it. She often disappears quietly and subtly into corners to doze or daydream. Don't mind her, she's just resting her eyes.

While she is generally cheerful and mellow and pleasant in her dealings with co-workers, she doesn't avoid saying what's on her mind and can be startlingly blunt. Though her soft demeanor and voice often result in people (particularly those that don't know her well) being more confused by her directness than offended.
HISTORY
HOMETOWN

Doddel Point, New York, the magical sister city of the now-abandoned Doodletown. It is moderately-sized, tucked discreetly in the Northeastern coastal forests, and known for two things: a wide array of magical bird species and a peculiar number of cemeteries.
NOTABLE FAMILY

Körbl Sparks (father - poet)
Lovelorn vampire poet that divides his time between sighing dramatically, writing, gardening, and spoiling his daughter. He isn't happy, but he's kind and he has a close relationship with his only child. He's quite old, but he looks young. Wendelin expects to lap him at some point. They have weekly blood tea dates.

Marceline ((Surname -- Connection Open)) (mother - Pureblood heiress)
Beautiful socialite on the outside, anxious mess on the inside. While she can be charming, she's so focused on appearances that she's constantly stressed and can be downright cruel when her image is threatened. She's got regrets, but she'll never admit to any of them. She pays off Wendelin and Körbl to, essentially, stay out of her life. While Wendelin didn't know who her mother was for much of her life, she convinced her father to tell her the truth when she was in her early twenties. They've met once.

((Connection Open)) (ex - Rookie Auror)
Wendelin's former partner who inadvertently challenged her to become an Auror. Their relationship is...something.

EARLY LIFE

Wendelin Sparks was the product of a short-lived fling between a vampiric father and a Pureblood mother whose courtship was all romance and impulse until they were forced to deal with the reality of an unexpected pregnancy. It was complicated. In the end, her mother didn't want to deal with the consequences of having a half-breed child or the judgement of her traditional family; she carried and gave birth to Wendelin in secret but left shortly thereafter, promising to provide for the family financially so long as her indiscretion wasn't made public. While this broke her father's heart, he agreed and raised their daughter on his own.

Growing up in wealth and coddled by her father, Wendelin had a pleasant enough childhood. Even if her unusual parentage did make her a target for teasing, rejection, invasive questions, and other behavior that was quick to make her feel like an other. But she was adaptable, learning to rely on herself and enjoy the solitude of her own thoughts, and she was a happy girl. Prone to alternating bouts of daydreaming idleness and inquisitive motivation even then, she was a capable but inconsistent student that only put in any effort when inspiration struck her. This frustrated her teachers and peers alike. Nevertheless, she excelled in Charms and spellwork, becoming a key member of her school's Dueling Team as she got older.
CAREER HISTORY

Following her graduation from the Sheldrake School (a private wizarding school in rural New York), Wendelin worked as a professional duelist and achieved some success. She won matches. She had fans. She earned endorsements. However, the thrill that had been part of dueling during her youth evaporated as it became routine and she quit less than two years into her career. This was also around the same time that her then-partner proposed to her and she turned them down, sending their once stable relationship into a turbulent on-again, off-again mess. Afterward, she drifted from occupation to occupation, but nothing ever stuck and she was never satisfied. Not until her then-partner ended their relationship to focus on getting into the Auror academy and pursuing their dream, leaving her with the parting shot that she didn't know how to commit to anything. This bothered her far more than either of them anticipated and she turned her energy toward getting into the academy and showing them how committed she could be. She was accepted and started at Ong's Hat in 2013.

While this decision was initially made on a defensive and petty whim, Wendelin soon found pleasure in how challenging and unpredictable the curriculum was. She could tell that she was on the cusp of entering into something that might give her what she was looking for. Maybe. So she stayed. While she struggled with the same fickle whims that had always undermined her efforts before, something new always arose to intrigue her and keep her motivated and she made it through the academy with impressive marks. Even if there were a few exasperated notes in her file too. By this time, it wasn't about her former partner at all anymore and she was ready to move forward.

Even with the oversight and limitations that came with being a new Auror, the office that Wendelin was assigned to seemed to believe in a trial by fire approach and she performed well in the many cases that she was assigned to. But not well enough to set herself apart. That didn't come until her second year, when she was chosen to assist in the arrest of a fugitive dark wizard that had stolen a rare (and apparently cursed) artifact from a collector and murdered two people in the process. She was just supposed to help secure a perimeter, but when the fugitive managed to elude one of the older Aurors and take down another, she pursued him and found herself in a perilous duel. It wasn't a pretty or easily won victory (and she'd be reluctant to admit that she turned the tide of things with a surprise chomp), but she managed to take down the target and recover the artifact and it was a turning point. Suddenly, her director knew her name and she was getting more opportunities to prove herself, which she typically did.

This success not only made a positive impression on her direct superiors, but put her on the short list for the emerging Operation Crowbar. She made the cut and has recently relocated to Las Vegas to begin her work with the team. She's eager to begin but, ugh, why didn't anyone mention that Las Vegas would be so sunny?
SKILLS
LANGUAGES

HOBBIES

Collecting...everything. Trying anything. Reading. Daydreaming. Sleeping. Finding cozy nooks. Makeup. Calligraphy. Dueling. Dancing. Making people carry her.
SKILLS
Nonverbal Magic [0]

Duelist Skill. Wendelin trained as a duelist even before her time as an Auror and was proficient enough to make a (temporary) career out of it; she's only improved since then. Her nonverbal spell-casting is quick, subtle, and fierce.
Obliviation [0]

Ong's Hat Skill. Like all the students that attended Ong's Hat, Wendelin was taught spells to remove and alter memories. She approaches the memories she alters like stories in a book and is quite adept at weaving together new memories that feel natural and believable. She sometimes gets a little carried away with the embellishments, though.
Nonhuman (Half-Vampire) [3]

Wendelin is the daughter of a vampire and has inherited some unusual abilities, though they fall far short of what true vampires are capable of. Among these skills are:
  • The ability to put others into a thrall. This requires direct eye contact and a strong push of will, but allows her to put another person into a trance and plant suggestions in their mind. It is, essentially, a quick and temporary form of mind control. This is most effective one-on-one, though she can put a small group into a thrall in a pinch, and against the weak-willed or the unprepared.
  • The ability to turn into mist. She can only do this for moments at a time, but that's long enough to evade an attack or slip through the gap in a door.
  • Enhanced senses. She can see in complete darkness and has particularly keen senses of smell, taste, and hearing.
While these abilities are certainly advantageous, there are also shortcomings to being a creature of the night. Most notably, being in direct sunlight for any substantial period of time physically drains her. She also has the occasional desire for some tasty blood, though this isn't anything she requires and she can usually be satisfied with a rare steak. Neither particularly helpful or unhelpful, she also has canines that are larger and more pointed than normal.
Charms Mastery [1]

Wendelin knows a lot of spells. She also knows how to find the right one for the right moment and can deliver them quickly, powerfully, and precisely. She's just generally gifted when it comes to Charms.
Stealth [1]

Small and agile, Wendelin can move quickly and quietly through most environments. She typically uses this skill to maneuver into a position that allows her to get the drop on a target or otherwise give herself an advantage in a fight, but she also uses it to disappear when she doesn't want to deal with something or she just needs to take a little catnap.
MISCELLANEOUS
WAND

Blackthorn, Fwooper Feather Core, 10", Springy. It has two prominent thorns on the hilt.
PATRONUS

Vampire Bat. Obviously.
OTHER DETAILS

  • She keeps a pink Fwooper as a pet and is diligent about maintaining his Silence Charm. Mostly. His name is Trilby and she's quite fond of him.
  • She has an exceptional memory when it comes to the oddities she collects and the things she reads, but a far less impressive memory when it comes to names and faces. What does this say about her priorities? Nothing good, probably.
  • When she's tuckered out or feeling lazy, she's prone to lean on others or even ask to be carried. Look how light she is. Is it even really a burden? She feels no shame whatsoever about doing this.
